Autonomous vehicles may have sounded  like a futuristic idea just a decade ago, but due to recent technological developments, it is estimated we may well be seeing autonomous vehicles on our streets sooner rather than later..However, to anticipate autonomous vehicles “dropping off” a pack of robot-dogs in order to deliver our packages..is most definitely not something many have thought of even imagined.

The idea in reality is not that far etched and has been talked about in numerous events, technology forums and expo’s we attend to. As you are all probably already aware, we are active players and consultants in the Intelligent mobility industry and it is our longstanding stance that the future is seamless, intelligent mobility..and Continental clearly agrees with the concept. What does that mean? Essentially delivering the right mobility where and when you require it.

In the future that could be a shared autonomous vehicle, your own car driven by yourself or autonomously or even a robo-taxi. But as well as all the aforementioned, Continental also suggests that we will also be seeing autonomous delivery vehicles. If Continental gets its way, autonomous robot dogs are going to be delivering packages as exhibited in the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas a few days ago. where they unveiled their Black Mirror-esque vision for how self-driving vehicles can autonomously deploy bots to facilitate last-mile deliveries.

The whole project is based on numerous studies and an enormous amount of research undertaken by Continental, proving that the robots are designed to increase availability, efficiency and safety in the realm of package delivery unlike current conventional options. The first part is the driver-less vehicle itself, called CUbE (Continental Urban Mobility Experience) which has a sole purpose of carrying delivery robot dogs and deploying them to handle the final delivery.

Continental Head of Systems and Technology, Chassis & Safety division Ralph Lauxmann said in a press released a few days ago: “With the help of robot delivery, Continental’s vision for seamless mobility can extend right to your doorstep. Our vision of cascaded robot delivery leverages a driverless vehicle to carry delivery robots, creating an efficient transport team. Both are electrified, both are autonomous and, in principle, both can be based on the same scalable technology portfolio. These synergies create an exciting potential for holistic delivery concepts using similar solutions for different platforms. Beyond this technology foundation, it’s reasonable to expect a whole value chain to develop in this area.”

It’s not yet been announced as to when exactly (or even if they actually will or are just in pilot stage) these will be deployed, but it’s most definitely a very futuristic and interesting vision of the future.
